Suppose that fish are imported from India in any of the European country. Is this safe food? There are certain well defined criterions. The sample of the fish will have to go through all these tests. If the ingredients present are conforming to the prescribed standards, then there is no problem. If the fish contains some unsafe ingredient, then the lot will be declared to be unfit for the human consumption and has to be returned to original country. The job of the food and veterinary office is to carry out these tests and confirm that food is not allowed inside the European countries if it is unsafe food.

They have additional duty regarding the contribution to policy of the European community about the food safety, animal health and plant health. It is also the duty of the food and veterinary office to inform all the stakeholders about the policy, legislation and its implementation in the field of the food safety, animal health and plant health.
